Title: Septimus Heap series (Magyk, Flyte, Physik, Queste, Syren, and Darke)
Author: Angie Sage
First published: 2005
Hardback print length: 564 pages
Septimus Heap is a series of (so far) 6 books. As a seventh son of a seventh son, Septimus is highly coveted, for it is believed that a seventh son has magic capabilities beyond that of an Ordinary Wizard. Follow his twisting, turning adventures that start with book 1, Magyk.
I was swept away instantly by the first book. Unfortunately, I can't say much of anything, as there are so many twists I'm bound to give one away! Magyk was so whimsical and funny I fell in love, first off, with Angie Sage's writing. It's like she's telling a story (which, I suppose, she is). It has a very fairy-tale feel, and I can here a nice British voice narrating cheerfully in my mind the whole time I'm reading her books.
This series is for lovers of magic, witches, and old-timey settings (it takes place in a castle town with robes, torches, and dragons). It is very very easy to read, but still extremely clever and funny. It made me laugh out loud A LOT. Anyone who liked Harry Potter will like these; it has the same feel to it, though a little more lighthearted.
Disclaimer: this book is 500+ pages, however, the font is huge and the pages are small. It's more like 300 pages of a regular book. It was a quick read for me and worth every page!
I would highly recommend giving the first book a try. If you're intimidated by the size of the series, don't be. Just try the first, and you might fall in love!
Overall series rating: 5/5 !

About Backyard Books
This blog was created by the author of Reading Under Trees. I saw a need to reach a broader audience, and that's what BB will be all about! On this blog you will see (coming soon) reviews of books for a younger target audience than that of RUT. Another exciting component will be the ability to see all of the book's AR information, like points, reading level, etc.! I will also include content information that parents and teachers might like to know before selecting books for their children and students.
Since these books are a little out of my usual reading zone, there will also be guest reviews by my own brother, and hopefully some other readers! If you would like to request a review for your student or for yourself, leave a comment or email Shay-la at shayla115@gmail.com.
This is a very exciting new project. I will be working hard to make sure this blog provides accurate and useful information for avid readers like myself!
Thanks,
